I have always loved programming. My parents bought me an Apple ][e when I was about 12. I learned Apple Basic from the manual, and built a Recipe storage tool. First programming lesson learned, you have to close the file to see any changes made to it.
A few years later I built my own PC. I played around with MS DOS commands and batch scripts. Mostly did a lot of gaming. In college I learned COBOL 2 and Microsoft Visual Basic. I had an internship where I learned SQL using a DB2 database on the IBM 3090 mainframe.
My first job was as a consultant to a Pharma company building an Accounts Receivable system using COBOL and DB2. After 2 years a former coworker recruited me to come join him at a regional bank. Here I continued programming in COBOL with a DB2 database. Then did some Visual Basic and Essbase work.
My last job was with a major Pharma company where I had been for the last 28 years. I started with more Visual Basic, and picked up some Java experience and moved on to Oracle as a backend database. I moved up the corporate ladder in those 28 years and was doing more project management and less programming. I did build an Excel VBA macro to read in Excel spreadsheets and do verifications and lookups on the data before the files were sent to a server and processed into an Oracle database. I recently have been taking courses on Python, Machine Learning, AI, IICS, and Amazon Web Services.
I am currently learning WordPress to build this site.
